California's budget situation is such a shit show right now, this is probably the least of the state government's worries, but interesting. The National Park Service is telling California if it closes state parks,
the NPS will take back six state parks that lie on land donated to California under the 1949 Federal Lands to Parks Program. Gov. Schwarzenegger's plan to cut spending to save the state $3 billion would eventually close 220 state parks, including Redwoods State Park. The six areas are:
- Angel Island, a former military fort and immigration facility in San Francisco Bay;
- A parking lot at the summit of Mount Diablo east of San Francisco
- A lighthouse and land at Point Sur State Historic Park in coastal Big Sur;
- The three beaches of Fort Ord Dunes near Monterey, Point Mugu State Park near Malibu and Border Field along the Mexican border
