Bit of old news, but the Banff Mountain Photography Winners were announced earlier this month. We never got around to posting about it because we're lazy. That's the Grand Prize winner above from Nathalie Daoust. You can see all the other winners on the Banff Centre site.

Going through pictures from our trip, this was one of my favorite. New fangled bear canisters that look strangely like Samsonite hard case luggage in the campsite next to ours.

After looking through this hilarious, overstaged photo shoot displaying Putin's outdoor hardiness in various ways, swimming, riding his "pony", fishing, it's so so obvious the guy is gayer than a fruitcake. Believe us, we know. Riding barechested on a pony? The strategic position of the fishing pole? Basically telling the whole world, "I'm gay." Gay. Gay. Gay. Don't let anyone tell you different. Big hug from GoBlog to our new gay outdoor brother who finally came out of the closet.

In our continuing series on Past Masters form the outdoor world.... Actually, that's not totally correct. This is the first, and knowing how things work around here, we'll probably forget to do another, so well, in our continuing series of one.... If you're serious about outdoor photography, you know Washburn. If your knowledge of outdoor photography begins and ends with Ansel Adams, well then do yourselves a favor and check out Washburn. Stunning work. We just received, Bradford Washburn: Mountain Photography, in the mail and it's really a beautiful piece of work, particularly because the large fomrat book captures the mountains from a perspective you may not be used to if you've only seen Adams - from above. As part of a US geological survery, Washburn took a ton of aerial photos, and this book is a sample of those as well as some more personal photos he took in Alaska, Grand Canyon, Cham, and a few other places. Pick up a copy if you can find it cheap anywhere. It's OOP and marketplace sellers are currently trying to gouge people.

Take an average bike. Prop up a lady next to it scantily clad, in a provocative pose, and the bike becomes the coolest bike you've ever seen in your life. Scientifically proven in countless studies. It's kind of like the reverse of the old testing bias you learned about in your college stat class, instrument decay. In this case, the more you look the hotter the bikes become. And there's no need to worry about your instrument. Get it? Your instrument. Woo, statistics humor. My humor knows no bounds. Quick, someone get me my t-table...Photos from theFiXFiXFiX's photostream.

We bag on Bode a lot, but climb_ca thinks he's pretty hawt. I said Tommy Moe, Ho-moe that is, is probably more his style. eBomb loves the ladies, no doubt, ' when I'm on Patron or off the 'gnac.' Regardless, while the Lange chix are one thing, the US has always produced solid women WC skiers and once in a while, a really good one. Tamara McKinney was a great one, skied with her a couple times in high school, super nice, but not so easy on the Nikon. Eva Twardokens lived around the corner from me, her father got me started on the sticks, and I admit, I climbed the neighbour's tree to get a peek. Picabo had her thing going, but really didn't excite the bomb loins much. Recently, a fantastic crop of talent ... and looks, has been dominating the WC circuit. And we're not even going to start on the women snowboarders. Julia Mancuso and the love paeans to her have been documented here already, but Lindsay Vonn nee Kildow has suddenly become an eBomb favourite. Why? She's successful, loaded, and hawt. Doh. No new news here, she's the winningest American woman WC racer and pummeled the comp this year. The various Euros and others really haven't much to offer, Lara Gut is definitely one, and young, Maria Riesch has a look, but Tanja Poutianen? Tina Maze isn't bad, eBomb fav Marie Marchand-Arvier is ok too in a way, but c'mon now, Lindsay is the shiznit. Is Maxim around the corner? We can only wish, perhaps I'll start a petition, tho her publicist probably already has this scheduled in as 'easy money.'

Poo. We all do it. Except my sister who goes once a week. Anyway, any expedition generates a ton of waste: food, wrappers, XL Magnum condoms, and of course, poo. With the amount of traffic at Everest base camp, realize it's not only climbers there, but a ton of trekkers too, the amount of this waste just piles up - get it? Zing* Anyway, there is always an environmental bond or deposit from the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism that you must pay (and never really get back and strangely finds its way to a Lexus dealership in Singapore) and usually your poo gets yakked out via those huge blue drums, only to be dumped in the Dudh Kosi that strangely makes its way into your fried rice at any guesthouse in Phakding. But is there a better way? This via Reuters. KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A young Nepali climber is seeking to popularize a toilet fashioned from a plastic bucket with a lid to promote eco-friendly climbing on Mount Everest.
Hundreds of climbers flock to the world's tallest peak at 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) every year, with many simply squatting in the open or hunching behind rocks as the Everest base camp has no proper toilet facilities.
Dawa Steven Sherpa, who led an eco-Everest expedition in May to collect trash dumped by previous climbers, said his team used a plastic bucket as well as a gas-impervious bag designed to safely contain and neutralize human waste and keep in odor.
Well, it's a start. So, instead of giving you a picture of poo, I'll make you happy and put up scantily clad women with no relevance to the article. climb_ca will of course say, 'dood, the advertisers, the advertisers...'
