1st Annual Outdoor Blogger Ho Down

So, eBomb and I got tired of waiting for Mangan to organize this. Or maybe we weren't invited. Personally, Chandler and the Yellowstone Fishing Guy (nice photos) have been "baiting" us long enough that it's time to play King Of The Outdoors. Not to mention that it seems like 50% of the outdoor bloggers online are in the CA or close proximity including Steve, Dan, Piton, OutdoorPro among the many. Those unlucky enough to be outside of Cali like the Dude (you in boxers on your site, not a good idea) are rich enough to fly here. Maybe even Cyberhobo can hop in his car and make the drive. Perhaps even some of our blogger brothers that don't consider themselves outdoor blogs like GoClipless and BlueCollarMountainBiking, might want to come out to Cali to see where mtn biking started. Would be nice to put faces to blogs. Like the hardest working woman in the outdoors, Little Po. Of course, the more the merrier. I'm not going to list everyone but we know you. We lurk on your blogs every day. Perhaps we'll leave the invite list to someone more detailed oriented and well liked. Mangan? Even if nobody shows up, at least eBomb and I will get one last climb in together before he goes off to K2 to pretend he's still Mr. Young Alpinist 1997. Here's what we're proposing. Again, just to get Chandler off our backs the venue we're throwing out is Nor Cal. Maybe Shasta. Horse Camp. October. No fishing up there, but there must be something close. Mtn biking as well. Watch eBomb climb Shasta in his thong again? Can't wait. But we're open. Chandler can put an activity list together. It's his neck of the woods. Anybody interested?

Update: As Tom M wrote, we agreed on Oct 6 to Oct 8, Horse Camp up at Shasta. Chandler, you better get on the intraweb soon, check your email, and start planning some activities. We're coming to your home town and we expect some good 'ol Nor Cal hospitality. And none of the crazy hippie, crystal loving Shasta stuff. I'm off to Kings Canyon this weekend, but look forward to reading the activity schedule on Monday.

Well...you just never know. I may just show up one day and scare ya...haha. Actually, I travel quite a bit and make it out to Cali. two or three times a year...so who knows.

Meanwhile, several of the cycling bloggers are planning a meetup at Interbike in Las Vegas if you can get out there (stay tuned to our blogs for details), but I am sure the more the merrier.

I've got vacation the whole first week of october but I'm planning to spend oct 1-2 at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF, so the second weekend would be excellent.

Hi. Sounds like fun. I saw that Tom ("Two Heel Drive") mentioned October 7 and/or 8 or thereabouts. Unfortunately - unless we get 100 mph winds again like last year - I plan to be at Fletcher Lake in Yosemite with my Talusdancers buddies for our traditiona Last Pack Trip of the Season.

The weekends before or after might work, though I may be photographing aspens in the eastern Sierra sometime in that time frame.

Anyway, it sounds like fun...

My friends are moving to San Francisco, and my wife and I were thinking about going out to see them sometime in October. The 7th and 8th would be perfect. I would definately enjoy hanging out with some folks with experience climbing other then in the gym.

By the way I dont see why you have a problem with climbing videos. I have been hitting up google videos lately and enjoying watching some Chris Sharma.

I thought the whole point of lurking on blogs is that we don't have to smell each other! I'm sure it would be unforgettable and all. Has anyone noticed that writing a few off-the-cuff blog posts is considerably easier than getting a crew together to go out and DO something? I guess that's why I tend towards hermitic hoboing - I can't even organize a weekend outing with my cousin across town. "I'll call ya..."

So tempting, I'm probably the one who has to travel the farthest for this outing; however, since I'm such a hard-working women, it should not be a big deal. At least CA is closer than AK.

the 2nd weekend of Oct is the best. I'm kayaking on the first weekend and trip leading for the 3rd.

Let us know the plan as soon as possible please, I'm not that rich to book a last-minute flight.

OK, here's what ClimbCA and I have agreed upon:

Weekend of Oct. 6 (friday) to Oct. 8. We added Friday as a travel day in case people come in from out of town.

Currently thinking of staying at Horse Camp, which is the jumping-off point for climbs of Mt. Shasta, though I have no plans to climb the peak. Sierra Club keeps a lodge there and rents campsites for $5 a night. The camp is 2 miles from the nearest road, so it would be a "backpacking" trip, technically, but we'll most likely just basecamp at Horse Camp (or a site to be named later) and hang out in the backcountry, day-hiking, fishing, takng pictures, etc.

Major airports would be Sacramento and San Fran. Anyone flying in could hitch a ride with Tom in his new Honda. Actually I volunteered him for that. If you want a ride in a '91 Subaru that's got 50/50 chance of making it, let me know...

San Francisco International, Oakland and San Jose are all options. Southwest often has good deals into Oakland and San Jose.

My current plan that weekend was to be gathering audio at a volunteer work day at some Tahoe-area backcountry ski huts -- but there might be other weekends I can do that. I'll coordinate with TM.

Activity list? Me?

You're getting a bunch of climbers together and asking a currently-on-vacation-in-Maine fly fishing blogger to put together an activity list?

News flash, buddy -- there aren't any trout on that side of Mt. Shasta, so my activity list would probably be limited to drivinking and practicing new fishing lies on unsuspecting, easily fooled climbers.

The good news is the Chandler wi-fi network (conveniently located at the base of the mountain in Mt. Shasta) should be available to all bloggers.

As for activities, that Climb_CA guy is going to learn to fly fish. And I'll lean on my friends at Shasta Mountain Guides for some activity ideas (my guess is they're going to suggest drinking also).

I'm in Maine and this is long-distance dialup, so I'm out for now and back later...

I would love to make it out but it's not gonna happen this year, especially in Oct. We here at Blue Collar MTB hail from VA and that date is just a week after Interbike so the recovery will still be going on.

The first mountain bikes did not have clipless pedals, which made it very difficult to get their feet out of the toe-clips if they needed to. It made it very unsafe, because the rider was sometimes forced to go down with his mountain bike when it wrecked. When clipless pedals were invented, it made mountain biking safer
