DMM Unveils New Cams, Which Look A Lot Like Camalots

I wonder if 35 years ago, people were saying, "Boy, I don't know, these look an awful lot like the Chouinard hexes ..." DMM introduced their new Dragon cams last week at the European Outdoor Trade Fair last week -- not sure if they'll be at OR this week or not. But these things are eerily similar to BD Camalots, aren't they? They're reported to be 10-15% lighter than Camalots, and have an extendable sling. Due out in spring 2010.

Well, DMM has made no secret of copying the Black Diamond design, however the Black Diamond patent ended in 2005 in North America, and 2006 in Europe. I like that DMM has basically just improved on what Black Diamond has not seen the need to improve on (since the new stem design of course). Now, without a patent on the technology I think that the Black Diamond design can be greatly improved (don't get me wrong C4s have been the best cams on the market for a very long time but that doesn't mean that they are perfect). DMM has simply taken a great design and made it better, this kind of competition will just make our equipment better, and safer. I especially like the fact the DMM has used the same coulor coding as BD because now, when I am updating my rack with what seems to legitimately be a better cam, I won't have trouble adjusting to new sizing/coulors. Mostly though, for me, it is mostly about the weight
