If you subscribe to the thinking* that caving is the new mountaineering, a team from the UK has just done the caving equivalent of climbing another 8,000-meter peak. British tabloids have the story of the explorers' find, a 1,000-meter deep shaft in China. (The Sun's headline asks, "Is this the world's deepest cave?" even though The Sun knows it's not.)

The two cave systems Qikeng and Dong Ba, measure about 3,100 feet deep, making it one of the deepest caves in the world. The deepest known cave is Krubera in Georgia, 6,822 feet.
