Professor Scott's 60 Year Old Mtn Bike Design

Bicycle Design has a great post on John Finley Scott, whose designs for mountain bikes in the 50s served as a foundation for the mountain biking industry which started across the Golden Gate bridge in Marin. Scott is finally getting inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. BD posts a pic of one of Scott's original bikes as well as a pencil drawing of a bike that looks like any modern day mtn bike, except with a sweet cup holder in the front.

That "cup holder" on the handlebars is a water bottle cage. Decades before anyone imagined the Camelback water was carried in one pint bottles that were placed in cages mounted on the frame or, as shown in Scott's illustration, the handlebars. One more thing to note in Scott's sketch--the straw coming out of the bottle, a feature that allows you to drink while keeping both hands on the bars. (Just like a Camelback.) Scott really was ahead of his time.
