Well, all you Dan Howitt lovers and Chad Kellogg haters can rejoice, or whatever it is you do concerning these rather pathetic speed records. MountainZone, yes, that Liz Hawley-esque ledger of climbing achievements (read much sarcasm) has retracted its publication of CK's Denali Speed Record.
In December 2005 Mountainzone editor Natasha moved to revise
her original article on Chad Kellogg. After she reviewed the material provided
by USA Mountain Speed Climbing and Dan Howitt (Portland
speedclimber) she went on to change her original 2004 story now stating that
his Denali record claim is
"Unofficial".
Besides the very annoying PointRoll ad with the mudslide that is on every MZ page, you get some wonderful pics of Dan Howitt ... and his dog. So this adds another page to the saga of these two titans, battling it out over ... zero sponsorship dollars and faint praise from the climbing community. If they were smart, they'd wear Red Bull helmets on their ascents, but these boys aren't marketers, just warriors, battling it out over an incredibly boring mountain unbelievably majestic mountain. Here's a suggestion, why don't they go head to head? Much like my battle royale with Mike Smith in the Western Cwm or my highly hyped duel with Russell Bryce to camp one on Cho Oyu, head to head is the only way to determine the winner.
