Ok, so there has been quite a bit of talk about Reinhold Messner and the newly discovered corpse of his 'brother' Guenther. A local mountain guide found a body, headless, some bones, some clothing, and a boot, all belonging to a climber presumedly Guenther Messner. Back in 1970, the Messner attempted a bold first ascent of the Rupal Face on Nanga Parbat. A technical and never before climbed face, the Rupal turned back many, but the pair, in alpine style complete this route. However,
Guenther never made it back and Reinhold suffered severe frostbite in the process. Much like
Tomaz Humar and Janez Jeglic on Nuptse, when one climber dies and the other survives, there are always doubts as to what exactly happened. Inconsistencies abound and Reinhold hasn't been too helpful by
already cremating the body in Pakistan, thus completely ruling out a DNA test. This is an event that forever scars Reinhold's climbing career, many say he abandoned his brother to die and pushed on when he could have helped. Hmmm... Messner is
now a politician for the EU, and MEP for Bolzano, I believe pushing some pretty hokie platform. Hey, at the base of it, he is a climber, probably lost a ton of brain cells, and is now a politician. Go figure, his transition into a known 'ass covering' profession only adds to the fact that he actually does have something to hide. You be the judge, read this
article.
