Everest Circus 2007: Climbing Everest 1920s Style

If this wasn't being reported in a few sources, we'd think it was a joke. Evidently Conrad Anker doesn't think there's enough of a circus on Everest and has decided to lead a team outfitted in climbing gear circa 1924, the year Mallory climbed Everest and disappeared. They will retrace his steps wearing specially adapted hobnail boots, knickerbockers, Burberry suits and fur-lined motorcycle helmets. All probably supplied by North Face as part of their new, "George Mallory Genteel Gear" line designed by Anker. Says Anker referring to his part in the discovery of Mallory's body eight years ago, "That moment has haunted me ever since." You know what haunts us? The thought of Anker in knickerbockers. You guys really dislike The North Face!

No. This is not a joke. The expedition is very real can be followed at www.ueverest.com. (Updated vids every day. There will also be a documentary and movie release as well.) Joining Anker is Leo Houlding and Jimmy Chin, among others.

The story of Mallory and Irvine is the most enduring mystery in mountaineering. Like all good mysteries, it captures our imagination and fascination and somehow grows more compelling with the passing years. Like it or not, Anker's name is forever linked with Everest and finding Mallory. It's pretty cool that he's back and open to giving the Second Step another shot - this time in "tweeds and nailed boots."
It will be interesting to watch how Leo, who smokes vert at sea level, will face the Step.

It is true. I was supposed to be a cameraman on the trip, but their budgets fell short and I was cut at the last moment. But, can't say as I'm entirely saddened to not be walking up the Rongbuk again after 4 expeditions to the North Side.

It will be interesting to see how they fare on the trip, and I wish them all my best. We had an amazing day - full of luck and amazement - back on May 1, 1999, when our team discovered Mallory's remains. I have been back twice since looking for Irvine and more clues to the mystery.

It is a fascinating story, and hopefully someday we'll have more answers...keeping my fingers crossed!
