The Vancouver Sun gave me a heads up about this, but National Geographic Adventure once again shows us they spend about as much time researching their articles as I do my blog entries. But at least it's better than taking a motor boat across the pristine waters of Loreto Bay National Park as they did in last summer. I mean, Everest for Mountaineering? Isn't 100 tons of garbage on the mountain enough? The Haute Route? Please, the Sierras and the Cascades make the Haute route seem like vacationing in Disneyland. Nevertheless, I wanted to blog about it for one reason: Scotland made it as a top destination for all around sports. And surprisingly, I have nothing but nice things to say about Scotland. I loved it. Good people, food, drink, and honestly some of the most breath-taking scenery I've seen in the world. So, I think it's cool they made this list. And ironically, the only guy in Scotland who blogs about the outdoors found us and posted a link to his site. So when you're getting ready for your trip to Scotland, visit his site for tips on what to do when you get there. Though it's more gear focused, I'm sure you can email him for some tips. And bring some beef jerky, they seem to be acquiring a taste for it over there. In the mean time, the list as summarized by the Sun: - For rafting, the Middle Fork Salmon River in Idaho; the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, in Arizona; or the Futaleufu River, in Chile.
- For skiing, the Haute Route, a backcountry trek between Mont Blanc, in Chamonix, France, and Zermatt, Switzerland; or the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association System, a backcountry ski route from Aspen to Vail, Colo.
- For mountaineering, Mount Rainer, Wash.; Grand Teton, Wyo., or Mount Everest in Nepal.
- For scuba diving, Palau, Micronesia; the Cayman Islands; or the Antarctic Peninsula.
- For surfers, Kauai, Hawaii; Panama (Santa Catalina or Bocas del Toro); or Upolu Island, Samoa.
- For mountain bikers, Crested Butte, Colo.; Moab, Utah; or Wanaka Lake and Village near Queensland, New Zealand.
- For all types of sports, Whistler (snow sports in every season thanks to the glacier, plus rock-climbing, biking and whitewater); the Dominican Republic (windsurfing, kiteboarding, diving, mountain biking); and Fort William, Scotland (biking, climbing, hiking, rafting).
