Hard to imagine the challenges facing park rangers in the many national parks across Africa. Armed poachers and guerrillas. Lack of resources. Vast tracts of land to patrol and protect. The list goes on. National Geographic has a report on a group of
rangers in Virunga National Park in the Congo that are using a blog, in this case via
WildlifeDirect, to call attention to the
slaughter of hippos in their national park.
I have just flown over Vitshumbi where less than two months ago we had counted over 200 hippos. Today we saw just 13. This follows a massive slaughter over the past week by a group of Mai Mai some 20km East of Vitshumbi on the southern shores of Lake Edward.
Spread the word folks. Post Congo Rangers to your blogrolls. Via National Geographic.
