Outside Magazine Gets It Wrong....Again

Not content with their hatchet job lynching Dean Potter last summer using circumstantial evidence to imply he caused damage to Arches, the fine folk in New Mexico bring you yet another piece of trashy outdoor writing. Don't get me wrong. We're kings of trashy writing, but well, it's GoBlog we're talking about not a ~~respected~~ national award wining outdoor magazine. Now you can expect the mainstream media to get it wrong, reporting that Kit DesLauriers skied Mt. Everest, even when she only actually skied 6,000 of the 8,500 skiable vertical as Dougald at Mountain World points out. But an outdoor magazine? Com'on, you're better than that. Actually, no you're not. It's Outside we're talking about here. They'll probably claim, like the Potter article, that they never implied Kit skied the whole mountain when they wrote:

"On Thursday, October 19 Kit DesLauriers became the first person to ski the Seven Summits and the first American to ski Everest"

Right. Anyway, fix it before you go to print please so the Slovenian Davo Karnicar gets the proper credit for skiing all Seven Summits when he finishes Vinson. Thanks boys and girls.

jesus, i leave for a weekend and climb_ca comes up with this tripe. since when is dougald the end all be all of journalism? regardless, she skied 65% of the skiable terrain, which in my book, is pretty damn enough. have you ever thought that maybe the skiable terrain was not in condition? oh, that's right, your mountaineering is limited to mt. blanc. for fock's sake climb_ca, you take one 'journalism' course and now you can comment on what is proper journalism? outside never pointed the finger at dean potter, but the likelihood that he caused the damage is more than conclusive. outside 1 point. in this case, you have no point. she skied the mountain, plain and simple, if she skied a foot or a mile, it remains she did it. outside 1 more point. were you ever to actually climb, or ski, or do anything remotely fantastic, you would care less what people like you say about it. 2-0, you can do better than that.

Wait, I'm confused. Not to bring up an old subject in light of this new (and arguably valid point you make about skiing Everest), but with the Dean Potter story, did Outside do a "hatchet job" or "a good anlaysis of the climb," as you stated when the story broke? You're probably confused, too. It's hard keeping your thoughts straight when all your thoughts rely heavily on others. If you didn't have Outside to nip at, what would you do? That said, I still find your take on matters a good counter-balance to a lot of crap out there, but readers (like voters) might find it irritating when the message isn't consistent.

eBomb, english please. you’re obviously still struggling with the language. but keep trying. you’re doing better. of course you're think she skied it. just like you think you climbed Everest. hence your nickname, EBOMB. lets just call your 27K on Everest a summit shall we? what’s 2,000K between friends. you would have made it anyway.

as far as the Outside article on Potter, it was far from balanced and the "evidence" of damage was and continues to be circumstantial at the very best. to my knowledge the NPS continues to investigate the damage and they have yet to charge Potter. your comment, “the likelihood that he caused the damage is more than conclusive” shows your command of basic law is about as good as your command of the English language. a bit too much time at altitude it would seem.

climbhard, regarding Outside’s good analysis on Potter’s climb, i stated my case in my blog entry. if you’re going to be judge and jury on the potter climb, at least have better evidence than “we dispatched a photographer to take pictures and there were grooves.” com’on. how many people have climbed the arch before? why even publish something like that unless you want to slant your article a certain way. that article would have been fine for a blog, but for outside, some people expect something more balanced. not me, but some people.
