Where Have All The Good Outdoor Blogs Gone?

We have to believe there are people out there blogging about the outdoors. But we're having a hard time finding them. I mean really, after weeks of deliberation, the GetOutdoors Blog Editorial team has come up with a total of one semi-interesting blog entry, and it's about a trip that took place a year ago. All the blog search engines including Google and Technorati are worthless since people have figured out how to use them to advertise. I've said it before, but there really is a dearth of good outdoors blogs. I mean, Yosemiteblog is ok, but how many things can you read about Yosemite or about people getting lost or plunging to their deaths over falls? Or maybe I just can't find these damn blogs. Admittedly, the editorial team consists of myself and my 20 month old, so it is biased towards pictures of bears and has a short attention span. If you have tips for outdoors blogs we should check out, please share. I mean really, is it that hard to find an interesting outdoor blog.? Isn't an hour long enough to look? One entry? One measly little blog entry? I dare you to find something better than this entry below:

Grave Lake Loop - Wind River Mountains: I had no idea where this was until I looked it up on Google. That internet sure comes in handy. Thanks Al. Anyway this blogger took a 3-day trip and posted his pictures here....a year later. Or does last summer, mean the summer that just ended? I'm confused. See what I mean about good blogs? Nevertheless, the Wind River Range stretches more than 100 miles in western Wyoming and contains 35 named peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation. Find out more about Wind River Mountains here.

I've been wondering the same thing...guess that's how I ended up here. As you point out, there are a few "my latest trip" blogs, but very little in the way of general interest outdoor content. Except for GoBlog, of course. Keep up the good work!

I think part of the problem is finding the small personal blogs among all the commercialized junk. Another problem is that most of these people would also rather be outdoors than writing a blog...

You're dead right, and that's in the US with it's wealth of blogs about everything. In Scotland it's even harder to find a good outdoors blog. I run an unashamedly commercial (mostly gear related) one attached to my wife's outdoors store at http://www.outdoorscoctland.co.uk/blog/ but the only one I subscribe to apart from GoBlog is The Bagger (a bagger is a person who is in the process of climbing Scotland's 284 mountains classified as Munros). He writes some good stuff at http://bagger.typepad.com/

Keep up the good work at GoBlog. I'm off to visit some of the other blogs in this set of comments.

I was searching in google for outdoor blogs, and I found this article, which basically tells me that they are hard to find. :-p

I personally has a blog, I write about learning outdoor skills and outdoor experience. I write in both English and Chinese and since about last Dec, all entries are bilingual.

Well gee, i've been blogging about the outdoors for well over three years now! I'm a pro ski patroller and raft guide (also spent last summer as a glacier guide). I post lots of photos.

I also occasionally blog about other topics as well and rarely do gear reviews--hell, give me free gear and i'll be happy to review it!

That's probably why all the other outdoor blogs ignore me.

Some of you might find this site useful: MyOutdoors.net. My brother and I launched the site recently and are trying to find out if anyone is interested in using it. It allows users to create and share journal entries that are tied to geographic locations using Google Maps.

We're looking for all the feedback we can get, so if you get a chance, let us know what you think.

Check out playinthecity.blogs.com its a great blog about Milwaukee and focuses a lot on the outdoors. Its a great resource for those looking to travel to the city or those just wanting to learn more.

Since you asked, http://troutunderground.com is my outdoor (read "fly fishing" blog). Sure, fly fishers can be prickish snots with more interest in single malt than the actual outdoors experience, but the Trout Underground is different.

It's the blog for people who think fly fishing should be fun, and hell, there's even a Manifesto on the "Why?" page. No blog with a manifesto could be all bad.

Even if you rush over this very second, you would have missed my "Sick and Whining in Tennessee" series of posts, and you're way too late to really get in on the Slaw Dog controversey. But by tomorrow, I may have come up with something new.

You'll weep uncontrollably later if you miss it now.

this is so weird that I found this post. I spent many hours online yesterday searching for blogs that were outdoor related. virtually NOTHING!! I did find one place that lets individuals post their own outdoor related blogs but the site's new and doesn't have many members or blogs yet. So I created a profile there and posted my first blog this morning. Not really outdoors related but check back in the future and I'll have journals of all my trips throughout the summer. I really wish some more outdoors enthusiasts would post blogs somewhere it's so cool reading about other people's trips and experiences...... I gotta do something while at work! hehe.... I'm putting together a site that aggregates feeds from a number of outdoors websites and blogs. Please visit NationalOutdoors.net, and give me some of your suggestions.

I think there are still a number of cool outdoors sites (and blogs) it's just that outdoors is such a broad term. Most people are into skiing or hunting or hiking so they visit blogs more specific to that pursuit and often are more in tune to a favorite region. The blogs are out and this list helps in finding them, so thanks for starting this thread.

Try this blog for a variety of outdoors information, including suggestions on outdoor activities for families. While my adventures are based in Oregon, they can give you basic ideas that can be used everywhere.
