The Oregon Cascades break up the heavy Pacific rains, dividing the land into the dry, comfortable east and the wet, wild west. The region is rich with history, geography, and geology, and our trip introduces you to all three and more.
Days 1-2: Three Sisters. We'll shuttle west to Sisters for a 14-mile ride up to the lava fields at McKenzie Pass - a ride that you can undertake by bike or enjoy from the comfort of the van. Next we'll bike (mostly downhill) through McKenzie and Santiam Passes, watching the forest change from pine to fir. After breakfast we'll hike the Black Butte cinder cone. As we emerge above the tree line, you'll see firsthand why this peak has been used as a fire lookout since the area was settled. You'll be treated to views from Mt. Jefferson to the Three Sisters. In the afternoon, we'll explore winding trails on horseback, then we'll clean up and head back to Sisters.
Days 3-4: Deschutes River and the Cascades Lakes. A morning shuttle brings us to the Deschutes River. We'll explore the flat waters by canoe, stopping just above Dillon Falls to abandon our canoes for a short hike around the falls to our awaiting rafts and the Deschutes' well-known 'white knuckle, whiter water.' In the afternoon, enjoy a single-track bike ride on the Deschutes River trail or relax by the pool at the Inn at Seventh Mountain. The next morning, we'll bike from the base of Mt. Bachelor along the breathtaking Cascades Lakes Byway to the famous Sunriver Resort.
Days 5 & 6: Newberry Volcanic Monument In the morning we'll explore the Newberry Volcanic Monument-including an optional trip a mile deep into the heart of a lava tube. After lunch we'll bike the shores of Paulina and East Lake before heading back for an afternoon at the resort and dinner in its four-star dining room. The final morning is yours to sleep in, soak in the hot tub, bike one of the many trails, play a tennis match, or just relax by the river before our shuttle back to Redmond.
