Hiking during hunting season adds a layer of risk to your journey. Take essential steps to make known you are a human, and not the hunted. Some hikers prefer to stay out of the woods until hunting season is over. When hiking during hunting season, heed warnings and take the necessary precautions.
Many areas that are open to hikers are simultaneously open to hunters. Before you plan a backpacking trip, find out if it is hunting season in the area. If so, know what is being hunted. If you are told that it is dangerous to hike in that area, heed the warning. Plan your trip elsewhere or reschedule when the hunters are gone. If the density of hunters is relatively low, you can still have a safe, rewarding trip if you follow the necessary precautions.
