Apparel: Caring for Your Apparel

Waterproof/breathable shells - whether they utilize a coating or a laminated membrane - depend on relatively delicate components in order to function. Wash them enough, but not too much.Waterproof/breathable shells - whether they utilize a coating or a laminated membrane - depend on delicate components in order to function. Don't expect even the most expensive rain parka to last for long if you abuse it.

  1. Keep the shell clean for optimum functionality. Grime and sweat can clog and contaminate fabric pores, reducing breathability.
  2. Read the tags and follow your garment's recommended washing and drying procedures. Certain types of detergents can chemically break down shell elements.
  3. Don't toss your parka in the washer after every use. The churning motion of a washing machine will gradually remove the water-repellent finish on the exterior of the shell. If this happens, the shell will still function to keep water from reaching your inside garments - but the nylon fabric can now become saturated by rain, which degrades breathability and gives the parka a cold, clammy feel against the skin.
Regardless of the care you give your shell, the water-repellent finish will eventually wear off with simple wear and tear. When water no longer beads on the surface the shell, restore it somewhat with a wash-in or spray-on agent.
