Weather conditions in the area tend to be localized and seasonably variable, but typical of a coastal Mediterranean climate. (Santa Barbara has often been called the American Riviera). January to March receives the most rain. During April and May, coastal fog and low clouds prevail and sea surface grows calmer. The most favorable weather conditions for diving and boating are from June through October. Average water visibility around the islands is 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12m) and water temperatures range from 65 to 70 degrees F.
