Ft. Pierre National Grassland In the summer months it is quite possible to have temperatures in the 90-100 degree range. Thunderstorms which produce occasional rains will also occur throughout the Great Plains. After rains the gumbo clay soil will ball up on tires and make travel difficult to impossible. We recommend staying on gravel roads or highways during these treacherous conditions. Most use of the area (during summer months) is by ranchers, fishermen and prairie dog shooters.
