Flathead National Forest ![]() Flathead National Forest is located in the Rocky Mountain Province of northwestern Montana. The Forest has 34 developed campgrounds and picnic areas, either clustered around the scenic Hungry Horse Reservoir or scattered along rivers and lakes. Numerous lakes can be reached by vehicle, horseback, or foot. Dispersed recreation opportunities such as hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking and berry picking are available throughout the Forest. There are 3 wilderness areas. The 950,000-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness extends about 60 miles along the Continental Divide, the 258,000-acre Great Bear Wilderness is north of the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and the 74,000-acre Mission Mountain Wilderness lies between the Swan Mountain Range and Flathead Indian Reservation. Elevations go from 4,000 feet along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River to over 9,000 along the Continental Divide.
