Cibola National Forest ![]() The Cibola National Forest is comprised of 13 separate parcels of land scattered eastward from west central New Mexico into northeastern New Mexico, the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and western Oklahoma. This includes four National Forest Districts totalling 1.6 million acres and two National Grassland Districts totalling 0.3 million acres.
Wildlife viewing opportunities abound on the Cibola with 10 established wildlife viewing sites. See deer, elk, antelope and wild turkey. There are numerous well-maintained, popular trails on the Sandia Ranger District adjeacent to Albuquerque, including three self-guiding nature trails. Sandia Crest is the most popular scenic attraction on the forest and one you will not want to miss when you visit the Cibola. The panoramic view from the crest observation point - 10,678 feet above sea level - is unequaled elsewhere in the state. In wintertime, the Sandia District offers a downhill ski area, snowplay area, and cross-country ski trails, open usually from the first good storms in December to about the middle of March.
