Aiken Canyon ![]() Aiken Canyon, one of the west's richest wildlife habitats, envelops a 1,600-acre woody canyon preserve. Over a hundred different bird species, drawn by the abundance of food, inhabit the Gambel oak and mountain mahogany scrubland native to the southern portion of the Rocky Mountain Foothills. Woodpeckers are especially abundant; hairy and downy woodpeckers can be seen throughout the woody canyon preserve. Large populations of wild turkeys inhabit the canyon as well. In spring time, the belligerent gobbling of the militant males can be heard echoing throughout the canyon as they lay claim to hens and territory. Roadrunners can be seen at the far northern edge of the canyon racing along, stopping suddenly, looking about, and then quickly pumping their tails. Several miles of developed trails in the canyon, provide excellent day trips for hikers.
