Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness and Preserve

The star species of Aravaipa is the bighorn sheep. Threatened throughout most of its range by hunting and the expansion of domestic livestock areas, the population in Aravaipa numbers between 40 and 70, depending on the year. Other large mammals found in the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness and Preserve include mule deer, black bear, bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, collared peccary, coati and ringtail.

A birders paradise is also found here, with the perfect habitat blend of water, pristine desert and riparian zones. More than 200 species of birds can be found throughout the wilderness.

Recommended Activities

  • In early mornings along the rock ways, look for gila monsters.
  • Take an auto tour of the preserve through the Conservancy lands.
