Alki Beach Park

The name "Alki" is derived from Al-Key, a word from Chinook Indian jargon meaning "by and by". Charles Terry, one of the original Denny Party settlers to the area, combined the name of his home town New York with Alki to produce New York Alki (New York by and by), his hope for the settlement. After a few years, people shortened the name to just "Alki". Originally pronounced AL-KEY, the pronunciation was changed to ALK-EYE during prohibition.

Located in West Seattle, this popular 154-acre park offers extraordinary views of downtown, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. A favorite of roller bladers, volleyball enthusiasts and walkers, you can people watch or bird watch from this beautiful Seattle beach.

Recommended Activities

  • Pack a picnic, and go for a casual Sunday afternoon stroll along Alki Beach's shoreline. Whether you're into people-watching or bird-watching, your opportunites for enjoyment are endless.
