Quabbin Reservation ![]() Quabbin Reservation houses the Quabbin Reservoir, a 25,000 acre drinking water reservoir, and surrounding 56,000 acres of primarily forested watershed land, including Quabbin Park. The 85' tall observation tower atop Quabbin Mountain boasts commanding views of the countryside and 3 other states. At Quabbin, you can see wildlife (bald eagles, deer, coyotes) and the abandoned sites of towns and farmsteads. The terrain varies with steep hillsides, high ridge tops, beaver ponds, swamps and streams. Woodlands are primarily mature hardwood forest (67%) with some coniferous cover (33%). Visitor Center staff serves visitors and local communities through exhibits, reference materials and programs. Three boat launch areas provide fishing access, while extensive network of trails (in the Park) and dirt roads give local residents recreational opportunities. Quabbin was built as a drinking water reservoir in the 1930's, disincorporating 4 towns in the process. No houses remain standing on MDC land, however foundations, stone walls and other cultural features are still evident. The reservation also preserves many Amerindian sites.
