Harpers Ferry National Historical Park ![]() George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, John Brown, "Stonewall" Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass are just a few of the prominent individuals who left their mark on Harpers Ferry, located at the majestic confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. Harpers Ferry witnessed the provisioning of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the first successful application of interchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first successful American railroad, John Brown's attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the United States. Activities at this 2,300-acre park include visiting the various museums and exhibits, hiking, fishing, rock climbing and rappelling. The Appalachian Trail and Chesapeake & Ohio Canal intersect at Harpers Ferry. Museums and other exhibits are many, including the John Brown Museum and Fort, Civil War Museum, Industry Museum, Restoration Museum, Wetlands Exhibit, Storer College Museum, Black Voices Museum, Harper House, and Jefferson Rock. There are seasonal Living History Exhibits.
