Bridger Wilderness

Bridger Wilderness is located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The 428,169 acre wilderness extends approximately 80 miles along the Continental Divide on the western slope of the Wind River Mountain Range in Wyoming. This range contains 48 summits higher than 12,500 feet, including Gannett Peak, the highest point in Wyoming. Seven of the largest glaciers in the Rocky Mountains are located in the Wind River Range. More than 2,900 lakes and ponds dot the Bridger Wilderness.

Management of the Bridger Wilderness is directed toward preservation of the primitive environment. There are no roads in the Wilderness, and motorized and mechanized equipment, including bicycles are prohibited. As a visitor to the area, you should share the responsibility for protecting the Wilderness. Think carefully and act wisely to protect Wilderness values.

Recommended Activities

  • Go climb a rock! Most of the major peaks in the Bridger Wilderness are of sound granite rock, and climbing is a popular pursuit. The best-known climbing areas are the Cirque of Towers and Fremont Peak along the Continental Divide.
  • See wilderness the traditional way: saddle horses and pack strings are a part of the western tradition.
  • Take a backpacking trip through the intricate system of trails, or hike through wilder areas for a feeling of complete solitude.
