Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, the quality of its remnants of American pioneer culture, and the depth and integrity of the wilderness sanctuary within its boundaries. It is one of the largest protected areas in the east, encompassing 800 square miles of the states of North Carolina and Tennessee, and is home to over 4,000 species of plants across a terrain that is 95% forested.

Rich in cultural history as well, the Great Smokies were home to a great diversity of peoples and cultures, from the Cherokee Indians to Scotch-Irish settlers.
