Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park embodies tens of millions of years of volcanism, species migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust bare Hawaiian lands from the sea and clothed them with unique island ecosystems and distinctive human cultures.

The park encompasses 217,000 acres of varied terrain ranging from sea level to the 13,677 summit of Mauna Loa, the Earth's most massive volcano. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes and offers scientists insights into the birth of the Hawaiian Islands.

Over half of the park is a designated wilderness that provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities.

In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as both an International Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site.

Recommended Activities

  • Explore the summit of Kilauea Volcano via Crater Rim Drive, an 11-mile loop road that encircles the summit caldera, passes through the Ka`u Desert and tropical rainforest, and provides access to well-marked scenic stops and short walks.
  • Hike the East Rift and coastal area via the Chain of Craters Road, which descends 3,700 feet in 20 miles and ends where a 1995 lava flow crosses the road. You might even get a chance to see active lava flows!
