Pilot Mountain State Park

Pilot Mountain is capped by two prominent pinnacles. The Big Pinnacle, with walls of bare rock and a rounded top covered by vegetation, rises 1400 feet above the valley floor; the knob juts skyward some 200 feet from its base. It is connected to Little Pinnacle by a narrow saddle. Visitors have easy access to Little Pinnacle. Rock climbing and rappelling are favorite activities at Pilot Mountain. Climbing is permitted in designated areas only. Pilot Mountain has twelve trails, several of which originate close to the Little Pinnacle and wind throughout the mountain section leading to many breathtaking views. The varied vegetation and wildlife of the area provide a special environment for the curious camper.

Recommended Activities

  • Spend an evening canoe camping along the river or explore the adjoining woodland corridor on foot or horseback for a memorable view.
  • Take a hike along the Sassafras Trail, a self-guided nature trail about a half mile long and moderately difficult.
