Newton Hills State Park

A unique dark forest amidst vast open prairie, this 948-acre park 6 miles south of Canton is part of a geological feature called the Coteau des Prairie, which is a narrow strip of rolling hills and forests that was created by glaciers and extends along the eastern edge of South Dakota. At its highest point the Coteau rises to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. More than 200 species of birds visit the area each year. Lake Lakota, found near the southeast corner of the park, is filled with bass, catfish, walleye and trout. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. The Coteau Trail, which crosses dense basswood/oak forests and open grasslands, is listed in the registry of National Recreation Trails.

Recommended Activities

  • Fish for bass, catfish, walleye and trout in Lake Lakota. Hike the Coteau Trail through dense forests of basswood and oak. Ride horseback across the open prairie. Cross-country ski on groomed trails. Take in sweeping vistas from the observation tower.
