Massive cypress and gum trees covered with Spanish moss form a canopy for the dark, acid waters of the millpond - a wilderness sanctuary for wetland wildlife. Paddle quietly through the pond and creek and encounter beavers, otters, and owls. There are about nine miles of hiking trails running through the woods of Merchants Millpond - Lassiter Trail (7.0 miles, easy) and Coleman Trail (2.0 miles, easy). These trails will lead you on a journey through interesting communities of coastal ponds, southern swamp, and mixed hardwood as well as pine forests.
