Curecanti National Recreation Area ![]() Three lakes - Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal - extend for 40 miles along the Gunnison River. When full, Blue Mesa Lake, with a surface area of 14 square miles, is the largest lake in Colorado. Panoramic mesas, fjord-like lakes, and deep, steep and narrow canyons abound. Recently discovered dinosaur fossils, a 5,000-acre archeological district, a narrow gauge train, and traces of 6000-year-old dwellings further enhance the offerings of Curecanti. Activities include backpacking, ice-fishing, cross-country skiing, scenic driving, dayhiking, birdwatching, photography, and all manner of water sports. The park shares its western boundary with the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
