Chugach State Park

Chugach State Park is an accessible wilderness in the backyard of Anchorage. Seven mile long Eklutna Lake is surrounded by glacier carved peaks. Wildlife viewing and mountain scenery are year-round pleasures, and campers can choose developed campgrounds or secluded backcountry valleys. The 495,000-acre park is popular with hikers, climbers, and cross-country skiers. The Eagle River Nature Center and the Potter Section House Historical Site offer interpretive displays and programs.

Recommended Activities

  • Hike one of the many, easily accessible paved trails or spend a day conquering Wolverine Peak.
  • Bring a compass and wander through the old growth forest among the moss and mushrooms.
  • Ski or snowshoe across hills and glaciers in the winter months and look for wildlife tracks in the snow.
  • Observe dall sheep, mountain goats, and pikas while snacking on blueberries, blackberries, currants, and cranberries.
