Cherry Creek State Park ![]() Cherry Creek's trail system will lead visitors around 3,915 acres of land and 880 acres of water - as well as through years of Colorado history. The early wagon-train travelers cut a path through Cherry Creek - it is now known as Smoky Hill Trail. Little did those travelers know that this prairie, dotted with yucca trees, would be an important resource for future residents of Colorado. The reservoir was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1950 to prevent flooding. This state park has several self-guided nature trails for everyone to enjoy year round. Hikers can expect to see verdant grasslands and fluffy cottonwood trees during the spring and summer. Wildlife watchers can admire the majestic mule deer and great horned owl year round. Little treasures, such as marshes, await visitors to the trails at Cherry Creek. While hunting is prohibited at the Cherry Creek State Park, many visitors enjoy taking aim at the Shooting Range. Cherry Creek State Park can provide a special experience for the winter visitor as well - ice fishing, ice skating and, as snow permits, cross-country skiing. Recommended Activities
