Boston Harbor Islands State Park

The Boston Harbor Islands are a wonderful natural resource, only minutes by ferry from downtown Boston. 17 of the islands are managed as a unique state park with 6 islands staffed and open for daily public use, operated cooperatively by the Department of Environmental Management and the Metropolitan District Commission.

Visitors to the park enjoy shell and slate beaches, flowering meadows, historic structures, hiking paths, picnic and camping areas, birds, wildlife, and spectacular views of Massachusetts Bay and the Boston skyline.

Recommended Activities

  • Visit Gallop's Island, which housed a maritime radio school during World War II, the remnants of which are still visible.
  • On George's Island, take a guided tour of Fort Warren, a National Historic Landmark or watch a special program offered from May - October.
