Located across the entire western part of Virginia and the eastern part of West Virginia, this Forest is the largest publicly-owned land base for recreation in the eastern United States.

Wilderness areas within the Forest include Barbours Creek Wilderness; Beartown Wilderness; James River Face Wilderness; Kimberling Creek Wilderness; Lewis Fork Wilderness; Little Dry Run Wilderness; Little Wilson Creek Wilderness; Mountain Lake Wilderness; Peters Mountain Wilderness; Ramsey's Draft Wilderness; Rich Hole Wilderness;

• Take the Raven Cliff Furnace Trail to follow the pristine waters of Cripple Creek through luscious pines.
• To see small waterfalls, geological formations, and a variety of vegetation create a scenic backdrop for adventure take the Laurel Fork Trail.
