Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Vickery Creek Unit The river's flood plain is a habitat for beaver, muskrat, mink, weasel, raccoon, and other small mammals. Look for their footprints in the mud along the riverbank, or in the moist soil near the creeks. The muskrat is about the size of a house cat and can be seen during the day. Beavers, weasels and minks are nocturnal animals and are rarely seen during the day. At dusk, you might hear a beaver slap its tail as it crawls upon the land to feed on the young and tender trees. If you are a bird watcher, look for the Great Blue Heron, which is a permanent resident along the river. While you are boating a Great Blue Heron might accompany you along a portion of your trip! Woodpeckers, belted kingfishers, and a variety of songbirds also can be seen. Permit Information Directions Information Center Activities
