Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Abbotts Bridge Unit Walk upstream from the main parking lot about 1/2 mile to discover half a bridge! Jones Bridge was built in 1904, replacing Jones Ferry, which operated between the Fulton and Gwinnett County banks of the river. By the 1930's the oak boards of the bridge had deteriorated and given way, making the bridge unsafe. The two counties could not agree on repairing the bridge, so it was closed. According to local lore, in the 1940's someone stole half of the bridge for the scrap metal. Neighbors didn't know the workers cutting the bridge were no authorized to do so until it was too late. The land on both sides of the river had belonged to the Jones family and their ancestors, the Martins, since 1819. John Martin purchased the land after it was taken from the Indians in 1818. In the 1970's Jones Bridge Park, on the Gwinnett County side, and the Jones Bridge Unit of the Chattahoochee NRA, on the Fulton County side, were established.
