Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Gold Branch Unit Despite the rapid urbanization, many species of wildlife can be found in and around the river. If you are lucky, you may see a muskrat on the rock shoals in the river. Look closely at the tree trunks and you might see evidence of beaver activity. Foxes, opossums, and raccoons also make Island Ford their home. Bird watchers will enjoy a variety of song birds, waterfowl, and birds of prey. Look for the distinctive Pileated Woodpecker, the Redtail Hawk, and the Great Blue Heron. Most snakes here are harmless, but do avoid the copperhead, a tan or copper-colored snake with reddish-brown, hour-glassed patterned back. Its bite can be dangerous. Large rock outcroppings along the river were used as shelters by prehistoric people and are an important source of information about past lifeways along the Chattahoochee.
