Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Medlock Bridge Unit The steep bluffs and rock outcroppings, creates a rugged and varied terrain that give Vickery Creek a topographical uniqueness of scenic beauty rarely found in the Metropolitan Atlanta Area. It was Roswell King's vision to build cotton and woolen mills along this stream that gave birth to Roswell in the 1830's. Ruins of the Roswell Cotton Mills can be seen from the current Roswell dam, constructed by Roswell King's son, Barrington King, around 1860 to provide improved water-power for the mills. Near the mouth of Vickery Creek, the Ivy Woolen Mill was constructed in the mid 1840's. Allenbrook, built about 1845, served as home and office for the woolen mill manager. Presently this historic structure serves as the home for the Roswell Historical Society. The Roswell mills were destroyed by Sherman's troops in July of 1864. After the war, the mill were rebuilt under the leadership of Barrington King. In 1929, the major mill buildings were destroyed by a lightening fire and never rebuilt. The 1882 Southern Mills structure escaped the fire and operated until 1978. In 1986, it was remodeled as a shopping mall. Permit Information Directions Information Center Activities
