Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Johnson Ferry Unit The stable forest along the banks of the Bull Sluice Lake are mostly oak and hickory, while stands of beech populate many of the ravines. Despite rapid urbanization, many species of wildlife can be found in and around the Gold Branch unit. The forest contains a large number of nut and fruit bearing trees, capable of supporting a substantial wildlife population. Look closely and you might see evidence of beaver, squirrel, rabbit, opossum, and raccoon activity. A variety of wildflowers and ferns are located throughout the unit. A major historical event associated with this unit was the construction of the Morgan Falls Dam, located south of the Gold Branch unit. In 1904, the Atlanta Water and Electric Power Company built a hydro-electric plant at Morgan Falls, creating Bull Sluice Lake. This plant provided the first hydro-electric power used in Atlanta.
