Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

Cochran Shoals, Sope Creek, Powers Island Units
These units contain 968 acres of fields, forests, wetlands, and streams. After centuries of agricultural use, nature is once again the dominant force on most of this land. Marshy environments and open fields that once were rich farmlands can be discovered on trails in this unit.

Cochran Shoals
Offers a fully accessible 3 mile fitness trail loop on the floodplain with 22 exercise stations. This trail is excellent for bird watching. Woodland trails wind through ridges and ravines west of the floodplain. Along these trails wildflowers bloom from March to October. Beaver dams can be observed on many of the small streams. Ducks, herons, and hawks are regular residents. Trails offer from very easy to difficult hiking possibilities.

Sope Creek
Several miles of easy to difficult trails lead through this forested unit. Beautiful wildflower displays occur each spring along the Fox and Sope Creeks. Sope Creek, named for a Cherokee Indian, and Sibley Pond are open to fishing. The impressive remains along Sope Creek are the remains of a paper manufacturing mill.

Powers Island Unit
Named for Mr. James Powers, who once carried travelers across the river on his ferry, has approximately one mile of easy trails. Because of the abundance of poison ivy, please stay on the trails. The cold water of the river contains 22 species of game fish, including trout. All baits, except minnows, are allowed.

Permit Information
State law requires fishermen to have a valid Georgia fishing license, a trout stamp, and one hand held pole. All natural bait is prohibited.

Directions
Access from Powers Ferry Rd (Cochran Shoals), Paper Mill Rd (Sope Creek), and New Northside Drive (Powers Island).
