Florida National Scenic Trail

6 - Suwannee River/Apalachicola
The trail follows the Suwannee River for a while. Be prepared to get your feet wet, as you will need to ford several swampy areas and streams. Cool off by swimming in the river on one of the beautiful sandy beaches. Hike through Twin Rivers State Forest, by the Econfina River, the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and Aucilla Wildlife Management Area.

Then you will reach Apalachicola National Forest, one of Florida's 3 national forests. Apalachicola's rivers and streams provide a steady freshwater flow to some of the most productive coastal bays or estuaries known for shellfish and other commercial seafood. Portions of the forest in wet lowlands abound with cypress, oak and magnolias. Stands of slash and longleaf pines cover the sandhills and flatwoods. There are several campgrounds in Apalachicola National Forest.
