Bitterroot National Forest


West Fork Ranger District
The West Fork Ranger District lies south and west of Darby and is the only District in the Bitterroot National Forest with lands in Idaho as well as Montana. The District also has the distinction of being the location of the famous Alta Ranger Station, the first Ranger Station built in Region One and perhaps the first in the country. In addition to Alta, other backcountry stations surive which reflect the management needs of the District and the Forest in the 1920's and 30's.



Permit Information
No permit needed.

Directions
The West Fork Ranger District is located in the southwestern corner of the Forest.

Information Center
The West Fork Ranger Station is located adjacent to the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, approximately 15 miles southwest of Darby.
