North Country National Scenic Trail

5 - Wisconsin
There are 4 certified segments (79.3 miles), in Wisconsin. In Iron County, a 5.1-mile segment begins 2-miles north of Iron Belt and ends opposite Weber Lake County Park. It passes through the rugged Gogebic Iron Range where short spur trails lead to nice vistas.

12 miles to the west, a 4.4-mile segment through Copper Falls State Park follows maintained trails and passes spectacular waterfalls. It takes you to the west side of Mellen town, less 2-miles from the 3rd segment in the Chequamegon NF.

The 3rd segment ends at Bayfield County Hwy A - south of Iron River, Wisconsin. At 60 miles, this very pretty segment is the longest. It passes through two small Wilderness Areas and offers abundant fishing. While remote and challenging, it is still a moderately easy trail. Considered together, beginning at Copper Falls State Park, one could plan a nice 68-mile hike ending on County A.

Farther west, the 4th segment is in Brule River State Forest. Beginning at Douglas County Hwy S, 1-mile south of the Brule River, it goes southwest for 7-miles to Douglas County Hwy A. The last 2.1 miles is a historic portage marked by 8 commemorative stones naming the early explorers and traders in the region.
