West Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District
Newberry Volcano, the main attraction of this region, is a large shield-shaped composite volcano approximately 25 miles in diameter and covers 500 square miles. It is made up of ash, pumice, lava, cinders and mudflows and contains about 100 cubic miles of volcanic material.
Permit Information
Permits required and may be obtained from ranger stations for a minimal fee.
Directions
Head east on State Highway 31 from US Highway 97.
Information Center
Ranger stations are located in both Bend and Crescent cities. There are also two visitor centers located at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
