Fire Island National Seashore Fire Island Lighthouse Area The Fire Island Light Station area at one time included the Fire Island Life Saving Station, Navy radio station, and off-shore lightship, as well as the tower and keepers' quarters which remain standing today. The tower and exterior are restored to their 1939 appearance, while the keepers' quarters now hold temporary exhibits and a gift shop. The current lighthouse tower, built in 1858, was predated by one built in 1825. The lighthouse was constructed on what was at the time the western end of Fire Island. As navigational technology improved, lighthouses became less vital to marine safety. The Fire Island Light was extinguished in 1974, but local citizens banded together to form the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS). The Fire Island Light Station is operated by the FILPS and the National Park Service. The light itself is maintained and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Call (631) 661- 4876.
