Watch Hill
Western gateway to the 1,300-acre Otis G. Pike Wilderness Area, which stretches 8 miles eastwards to Smith Point, Watch Hill is also home to the park campground, a self-guided nature trail, a seasonal visitor center and ranger office, a lifeguarded beach (summer only), a bath house, and payphones. Seasonal concessions include a restaurant, general store, snack bar, and 188-slip marina. There is a bathhouse and payphones. Visitor facilities are open from May 15-October 15.
Watch Hill is located directly across the Great South Bay from Patchogue, Long Island, and is accessible by boat and foot only. There are seasonal ranger-led interpretive activities, including canoe trips. The 26 family and 1 group camp sites must be reserved in advance.
Activities include hiking in the adjacent to Otis G. Pike Wilderness Area, birdwatching, enjoying the bay and ocean beaches, and canoeing.
Permit Information
Obtain the required wilderness permits at the Watch Hill Ranger Station.
Directions
I-495 or Route 27 to Route 19 (Waverly Ave.), which forks 1 mile s. of Rte 27; take left fork to Main St. (Montauk Hwy) which becomes West Ave. past Main St.; cross RR tracks, go thru stoplight to park at Watch Hill Ferry Terminal. Take ferry.
