Chugach National Forest

Glacier/Prince William Sound
This region's abundant resources have supported Alaska Natives and attracted English, Spanish and Russian explorers. These early visitors came looking for the Northwest Passage, but found rich furs, gold, copper, and salmon instead. Today people continue to rely on these resources and to seek adventure in the region's wild expanse. Specifically, Prince William Sound's resiliency is a testament to the long history of human use and its natural rugged character. But new access to the sound from the road to Whittier brings more people and the potential for environmental impact.
