Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Cataloochee
If you are willing to go a few extra miles to reach a lovely off-the-beaten-path destination, Cataloochee is the place for you. Historic structures here include a school, church, barn, and several homes. Wildlife viewing can be fruitful in the open fields and meadows.

The challenge is getting here -- from most places it requires a fairly long trip on winding gravel roads, though the roads are well-maintained and fine for passenger cars.

Permit Information
Free backcountry camping permits are available at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center just off US 441.

Directions
Exit I-40 at North Carolina Exit #20. After 0.2 mile, turn right onto Cove Creek Rd and follow the signs 11 miles into the Cataloochee Valley.

Information Center
The closest visitor center is located in Oconaluftee.
